close friend of mine went to jail for beating up some crack dealer at a party. They never charged him but he spent 39 days in prison anyways (illegal) - so the guy they hired got him off without charges ($5k) but then they sued the city for locking him up for more than the alloted time without charges and they won 350K

but that is just a side story
