it looks like an implicit assignment to global name in both the top snippet and the bottom, but the behavior is different

the bottom snippet makes sense, but the top one doesn't

name = "Pete"; sounds like it should be implicitly assigning to the global name

because there's no var / let / const in front of it

but it looks to behave as if it's local

if you do only

function makeWorker() {
    name = "Pete";

    return function() {
      console.log(name);
    };
  };

then name would display ""

that is because of the function re-scoping

I think it is local

even if there is no var or let before it

it has to be in global scope to create a global variable

unless you're using window or something

no, any time you don't use var / let / const / variable as function argument, if you use =, you implicitly assign to global
