Separate hosting for database and code - good idea?

it's more of a scaling issue

a database and a web server have differents resources needs

a database needs a lot of i/o, a web server needs more ram/cpu

So, that sounds like "yes, it's a good idea and here's why"

I was thinking about the ease of load balancing for the code, if it's ever necessary.

Several servers, with the same code, all hitting the same database... but then what about the database? How hard is it to load balance without concurrency/duplication issues? Or do I just throw more hardware at the database as traffic increases and not worry about multiple servers?

most databases have replication features between themselves

it's often cheaper to buy a new server than to get more hardware on a single server

you'll get issues about keeping sessions too, so you'll also need some redis or memcache servers

Well, when I say "throw more hardware at it", I often mean "just get a newer, bigger server"

.... and yeah, I deal with this kind of shit daily

It's easy. Down for first, then up the rest of the way. Then you just go all the way back down to first and do a half shift up for neutral. Or go down to second and do a half shift down. Best way to explain it.

Clutch feels identical to a car except it's so much easier to do by hand and with such a light vehicle you can actually feel the engagement.

My car has a stiffer clutch so I know the exact engagement point. People say stiffer clutches are harder but I feel a loose clutch is jumpier because you can't control the pressure as well

Yeah, the "stiffer" your clutch, the less worn it is. A loose clutch just means that the plates are worn and the clutch is on it's way out.
