we are trying to partner with a company that wants to use our system "oem" and is putting their plc in front of it.

i know more about the plc logic than the other guys so I had to go along

14 hours including drive (hour each way)

also I will likely have to be doing commissioning in the future so it is helpful to get onsite and see the product in action :)

You didn't specify any metrics to your website or file, so I didn't specify any metrics to my answer, too.

Ok, would you lighten me, and ask me a question that will sharpen the first question?

What does your website already consist of? What is it for? What is the file for? Do you really need it? Why are you concerned with the file-size? Is there an alternative?

All of those and so many more determine what "reasonable" is. After all, $1000 is a reasonable price for a nuclear powered toaster

And even that isn't set in stone. 8kb is reasonable, but 8.5kb isn't?

I could be just skidding around, and just say that if you can feel (instantly or cumulatively) the load of that file, then it's unreasonable.

And could also say that if you're considering not including it, then it's not really needed, and you can skip it.

Ok, let me try to be more clear, I am developing a widget that could possibly go to any website, blog, news, personal site etc...
The product (sorry NDA :| ) is nice to have, but not a necessity (at least not for the start) think about a facebook like button (when facebook wasn't that big).
I guess this is more of a personal or physiological question, but i'd like to know when I am going to far... better?

If you're developing it, then include the bare necessities, and have everything else be optional. In other words, make it modular, so that people can just add what they wish when they wish.

What are you trying to match?

I want to match something like Text1|Text2|Text3 where Text1 is a dynamical variable, Text2 matches [a-zA-Z0-9-] and Text3 matches [a-z0-9]. And the lines(|) between

Well, you didn't need the / at the beginning, and to get the backslash into the regexp, you'll need to escape the escape; so to get a literal | into the regexp, you need to do \\|

If you want to match more than the one character, you'll need to put a + after the groups

And try fetching a document and testing on that; this is a great playground
