what was wrong? The company is downsizing cause of economic reasons?

layoffs are frequent here. the new trend is hire contractors and they can layoff the contractors without notice.

there are very few people in my dept that are getting let go, so it's mostly other areas, I suspect.

I've been laid off twice in my four-company career

Here, the legal minimum is 1.5 gross salary per (year - 1) worked as a severance package

that's some company loyalty Carl, only 4 companies in your 1000+ yr career

India has tons of laws regarding stuff like that, but many companies will just ignore it

Rarely worth the time/money to take them to court, since in a major city a civil case takes so long to get in front of a judge, that you basically file it with the expectation that your children/grandchildren will see some money out of it

And who knows if the company lasts that long

It's usually not followed for big checks, they try to negociate : "either Big amount / 2 now or full amount in 3 years after dragging us in court, assuming you have the means to survive until then"

But many people manage to get that amount * N, after justifying of psychological damages because of this. But it's a long fight
