it won't be a child of the toolbar per say
but you can, for example, center an image by using "top to top of toolbar" "bottom to bottom of toolbar" "start to start of toolbar" "end to end of toolbar"
@TimCastelijns Because I want my toolbar elements to be responsive
BTW the toolbar is included in every activity per <include> which is why I am thinking I could do this with just a CL instead of the actual toolbarwidget

Here is my setup; a start a background async operation to talk to the Api, then in onPostExecute, I use EventBus to communicate back to the activity which then does a write operation to DB (realm)

That's most likely the issue
a synchronous write on the UI thread blocked by a background service
For instance you could create two empty views on either side of a row of elements with width 0dp and weight 1 and they would squeeze the inner elements and center them
in that way you could make a horizontal packed chain
