Show thread history on a single page? I was thinking about that, would probably want something lazy-loaded via ajax though because of the way it works underneath, getting the whole thread before serving the page would be slooooow

@DaveRandom one could build one json doc per each thread and then store it and then index it and the take one of the standard search tools.

normally after some time, only the current threads get updates.

with that in mind it could scale pretty well.

@BenjaminGruenbaum I'm currently running about 10% faster than node.js using a fully HTTP/1.1-compliant server written in PHP. If I eliminate a bit of flexibility in the code and require the PECL libevent extension I've been as much as 30% faster than node.js.

The "slowness" you attribute to PHP vs. node.js is not PHP's fault at all. It's a fundamental flaw in the idea that you have to use PHP behind another web server. If you can cut out the middleman you can write applications in PHP that are as fast or faster than what's possible with node.
