However it's got to be done. The only developer who understands the system has quit and will leave in 6 weeks. The code he leaves behind is an utter mess and totally uncommented, and spans tens of thousands of lines. Also, I just hate it there. And a job turned up on monster that pays nearly double.

The only way to make the main doc root work is not include the httpd-vhosts file. Is this normal for the virtual hosts to overwrite the main doc root even when browsing to standard localhost?

@InGodITrust actually we do not know HOW gravity works. The Newtons theory only covers the subject "how strong the gravitational force is" but forces in physics are abstract concepts
