@JavaFan your mariadb server shouldn't be running with --skip-grant-tables unless you're trying to reset the root password or something. If that's what you're trying to do, follow this article: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/resetting-permissions.html
Wondering if there's any efficient way of inserting entries into an array in an arbitrary order, but so that they're easily retrievable ordered by key (wthout resorting to alternative datastructures like a heap)... I know that I can ksort, but want to try and avoid that overhead if I can
Keys aren't known beforehand unfortunately, I'm loading unordered data and need to order it, but volume-wise, ksort is an overhead; I'm using it at the moment, but would prefer to avoid it if I could
Other than using a fixed array, where I can inject directly to a set position in the array based on the key value, but that's not memory efficient, especially with lots of holes in the fixed array

well, building on the "inject directly to a set position in the array based on the key value" but without the "lots of holes in the fixed array", one can get to a linked list, that would offer its values in sorted order, but add a small overhead on insertion, yes?
0-255 for the key range with the work I've just done, I've been refactoring my Trie classes; but with what I'm looking at now, it's a much wider range, with RadixTries

It does have its uses, although "loading" the trie is inherently slow and needs to be redone every request because of the lack of persistence in PHP; but they're still highly efficient for searching

That varies.... postcode lookups on an outcode, lists of rugby players through the ages, dictionary words ending in *tch (cheating at Pointless words rounds)
But more practical using them for anything where the data is dynamically retrieved from external sources where loading the data into a database is slow and will be out of data on the next request
