Openssl has nothing to do with free vs. paid certificates. You can generate and sign a certificate yourself for free using openssl. You can also verify that cert yourself for free using openssl.

the only other time I've heard the word heartbeat is when messing with high availability stuff, drbd and the heartbeat software, drbd is supported by low level kernel features that could I guess need to be a compile time option ... it does look like it' something to do with that ...

I'd definitely prefer to not need to know anything about SSL. I want my software to hide ALL of those details.

@rdlowrey yeah, crypto should be left up to those focusing on it. Admins should never be able to (or worse, have to) make decisions on that front.

@ircmaxell Totally, that's why I feel bad for them -- they'll catch a lot of flak for it but in reality I know I'd be perfectly capable of accidentally doing the same thing.
