It looks to me, however, as if a great deal of it really comes down to one thing: people are doing virtualization because it's fashionable, not because they really need it. People seem to believe that a modern OS is basically like MS-DOS, so if they want to run more than one program, they need to run multiple virtual machines to do it.
 
So, switching from 9xx to 1xxx NVIDIA GPUs causes a segfault on the GPU side. In the older 9xx line the segfault still happens but no fucks were given and all validation & units test pass. On 1xxx GPUs it takes down the program. So, I put a if (idx < 0){return 0};. I am the greatest. I stole/wrote the code a year ago and have no clue how it works.

I think virtualization makes sense as a security measure. At least one VM doesn't take down the whole cluster..of vm if you have a really big comp
 
Also deployment and scale-ability, real problem is that many systems in production crash every 15 minutes - and docker is seen as "an enabler" of bad code.
 
That's unless one of your vm start to swap like hell
