I once read an interesting study about "work getting done vs pay". In physical labour they found a linear relationship (up to a reasonable point ofc) pay vs work being done. In our line of work the was an early cut-off much like Morwenn describes. Job output no longer depended on pay as long as the basic needs + a little extra was met.

@Mikhail I recall the distinction being made with "Manual labour" and "Intellectual work". I do recognize the grey area.

What about college level teaching/lecturing ? The actual lecture is mostly a sham, on the other hand if I do 2 x 300 people classes I might look really productive, when I'm really delegating work to TAs...

@Mikhail =) I'd consider that Intellectual work. I have made forays into the "real" world. All of those attempts have been accompanied by almost ridiculous salary claims on my part.

I have gotten offers close to my almost ridiculous requests, and I still have two salary-wise excellent standing offers.
