it's a fun effect if applied correctly, but not for every fucking thing

FreeType is really just pure rasterization, and even its kerning module is outdated.

A premier solution that's as low level as possible uses FreeType + Harfbuzz and can get pretty close to what Pango can provide with minimal effort.

Eliminating harfbuzz means you have to write your own layouting engine based on the OpenType rules (blech).

@melak47 It's self-hosting. Clang-cl can compile about 80% of all real-world sources (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Clang/LLVM themselves) as long as they don't use exceptions.
