What's the best way of preventing NULL as incoming reference? Should I have an assert inside the method that is being called or before? Should I want to assume that the reference that I receive in my function is never NULL? ideone.com/k98kw

@ManofOneWay The best of both worlds is to store a pointer, but present only a public interface that involves references. You get the 'pointer is never null' invariant for free.

There is such a thing as the null object pattern though.

@Neil see, "support" generally means "make sure it keeps working, fix bugs and plug security holes", and not "completely change the product's feature set, so that it is not just up to date at the time it's being sold, but is kept up to date for an indefinite number of years afterwards". No serious product does that. Not even FOSS ones. GCC 4.3 still has GCC4.3's feature set. Clang 2.8 doesn't get new features today. If you want new features, you generally upgrade to a newer version.

A: Uninitialized values behave as expected on Linux but not Windows

This "works" on no platform. All it does is to invoke Undefined Behavior. "Seems to do what I expected it to" is but one way for UB to materialize itself. It's a rather unfortunate one, though, because it makes you believe your code is fine, until one day it explodes into your customer's face.
