@Will yes, i recommend you stay away from MAMP.. it incredibly hard to manage. upadting the installed version of apache and rolling on your own build of AMP is better

what package manager are you using? did you roll your own MAMP stack?

if you're unfamiliar with terminal, i might suggest installing a VM of ubuntu (or anything unix based) and then you can follow a tutorial

anything you do in OS X is going to be highly technical and advanced
