watched some guys talk the other day about why we should wrap every API we use so our app code doesn't touch it directly.

Today I noticed some code that's been live on a large retail client's website for almost two months which causes the main navigation on every page to be hidden until after 3 seconds after page load for ~50% of users. Must resist urge to break people's fingers.

how many of you have considered a position in teaching... so you know.. you can teach students how to actually learn.

I think of it as more of "When I run into a problem I haven't experienced before, a google search brings me to StackOverflow where I find out how others have already found ways to deal with the problem without having to waste time figuring it out myself."

Professors are really underpaid and you have to write papers and students under 20 are just annoying

if your a doctor, i agree. if your a EMT, you need to know exactly what will correct the issue and nothing more, b.c your NOT a doctor

Its the same with programming, there is a definite difference between copy and pasting code, and looking up the correct way to do something, or even the algorithm behind it.

I think a better analogy would be teachers. Some go to it because they want to be a teacher, because they want to teach kids, help the future, etc etc. Some go there because it's a job and that's what they're stuck in.

i think most of the regulars on here *want* to write great code, to be great artisans. we want to make it better.

I'm at a fortune 100 company right now, we have 200 developers on staff. 197 of them are great people, but just want to come to work, do their job and go home. They don't care to optimize a for loop until the end of time.

Bit Test

The BT x86 assembly language instruction stands for Bit Test and was added to the x86 instruction set with the 80386 processor. BT copies a bit from a given register to the carry flag.
