Q: How do JavaScript closures work?

How would you explain JavaScript closures to someone with a knowledge of the concepts they consist of (for example functions, variables and the like), but does not understand closures themselves? I have seen the Scheme example given on Wikipedia, but unfortunately it did not help.

I have an another project request. Client complaints that his site is vulnerable for XSS attacks. Users could enter XSS in their forms and that doesn't get sanitized. However, at the client side (they use jsp pages), they have <c:out value="${someVar}" escapeXml="false" /> for everything that they want to display
