the way i phrase this question betrays my ignorance of the topic, but: i want to get better at deploying and managing web apps and servers.

i have no idea what i should even try to learn

approach so far has been to log into our virtualization system, create a new vm, and manually issue commands until the app works

what should i look into learning?

@bitten no, i don't use CI atm. I work in a few different environments, one of which I can just sftp copy files onto a static assets server via gulp script, the other is a PHP laravel project that I run a few bash scripts and commands to deploy

@NathanJones ah okay, ssube kinda put me on the path to ci but i used it to tie into branches with git

you can configure a runner to run scripts, and you can trigger these scripts against the branch you push up

this is a really naive proof of concept which i use at the moment

so my tests are run against the develop branch, and the deploy script is run on the master branch

so every push to the master branch means a release

@NathanJones yeah at the moment.. you don't have to and there are better services than rsync for it

i don't use that exact config file, it's just a poc/pseudo code to explain a workflow

i used ci to deploy on one project as i have a competent client and often he wants to test features or changes his mind or if it finds a bug he can rollback the master branch through the gui and it'll trigger a build

so that helped in that situation

@NathanJones also i'm quite strict with the master branch. every release is a definiton and it's a protected branch on gitlab so only certain people have acccess to change it and that's been working really well

@NathanJones no problem! i have a friend who is working with magento php builds too and i showed him my ci set up last week and he's looking to set it up too

he doesn't use docker though and doesn't need a large pre-prod workflow since magento handles a lot of things for you

but uses ci to deploy
