That probably wasn't possible with comparable efficiency... You are moving a lot more mass... It's kind of like land speeds. Once you get to a certain speed pushing through the air is like pushing through water. You start to hit the same limitations with more rotating mass..

IIRC, in about 40% of the US, solar is cheaper than fossil fuels for power without subsidies.
