Anyway, first of all, \1 in a string turns into just 1 because of escaping.

Second, .replace uses $n for getting capture groups

@Zirak - Sure. So every time (beings at first line of code) code is executing an execution context is formed. It contains a this binding, a lexical environment, and a variable environment. Both environments are technically lexical, however the variable environment represents the most recent declaration of a variable and takes precedence if that variable existed in the lexical environment. The environment record is the result of lexical and variable environments.

Each transfer of control for executing code causes a new execution context to be created. The new context will contain the this binding, and both lexical and evironment environments. These contexts form a stack.

@TravisJ hrm, it seems that the VariableEnvironment holds the initial "snapshot" - which variables are declared, but does not represent their values as they change. The LexicalEnvironment however does, since it's used to resolve identifiers.

I am not as familiar with the change tracking. I know that the VariableEnvironment is used to overwrite values in the LexicalEnvironment since the LexicalEnvironment gets its values from farther up in the stack.

I think this, from your link, shows that new variables are either entered into the lexical environment by either setting the previous value to the new one, or creating a value if none existed
If varAlreadyDeclared is false, then

Call env’s SetMutableBinding concrete method passing dn, undefined, and strict as the arguments.

The lexical environments are inherited from the stack structure, so previous lexical environments will not have the value changed from the new variable, whereas lexical environments further down the stack will reflect the new value

haha yeah citing the spec is important, but I tend to read over the horrible implementation nitty gritty, and focus on the cool stuff like how operators and functions are defined.
