So, to sum up my recommendations:
* If you want a short, 1 or 2 day watch: FLCL for its simplicity and beauty, Gunbuster for the sci-fi elements and later effects on...everything.
* If you want to be mortified and amazed, Elfen Lied.
* If you want to invest in something and be enlightened and changed for life, Evangelion.

The only real reason you'll cache length is if you're dealing with a live NodeList, in which case accessing length forces a re-selection

I guess it really doesn't matter which of the two you watch first, as long as you do watch them both eventually.

Note that Elfen Lied is shorter, kind of ends "in the middle of the story", and is far gorier than FMA.

FMA is longer, has a more "robust" plot, some awesome battle scenes, and some of the best soundtracks I've heard.

EL has 13 episodes (IIRC) and FMA has 75

You won't get bored with any of them.
