I think it may have to do with the fragment instance and its ties to the viewpager/actionbar, can you check for and create the mFragment instances before the validateView() calls?

but that doesn't explain to me at all why the crash is happening, nor what is misconfigured

it seems like the framework should be throwing an IllegalStateException somewhere, but isn't, and thus is getting into a bad state

just a guess until i can recover my machine, but the android os seems to expect 2 children that don't exist in the onMeasure function of the frame layout. Perhaps this is because the fragments are static but not initialized. The first thing I'd do is move the setHighlightedIconButton call further up validateView until I find the line that fixes the crash, knowing what that line is could give us more information about what's going wrong. My guess is it's the newInstance/add call when frag is null

i really like the effect the play store uses

where its a banner image that is like part of the action bar

but when you scroll down the color of the action bar fades in

so that when the banner pic is scrolled up past the focus of the frame its like orange or w/e

orange is google music which does the same thing, on play its green
