nil is right, #define is is a straight pre-compiler injection afaik then it's parsed and compiled as if it were code. the #define statement itself isn't an object or anything except text to inject.

@owatch what the book means is MAX(A,B) isn't a direct one to one text injection, it replaces the A/B values with the value supplied. Then that string is inserted directly.

because it's a very simple mechanism, it's both the pro and the con to define statements

another way to fix it would be if(x < y){swap(x,y);}

but if you forget the braces you have those weird issues and a function is a better choice.

functions have a level of overhead for checking types and what not, macros do not which can improve performance when something very simple is repeated a lot. You just need to be careful the improved performance comes at the cost of less safety.

Well, when I started with Python I really could not commit too much time to it. It was really half reading a book I'd had on it and more just mucking around.

i couldn't comprehend python at all haha :p when i tried it

Eventually I found something I wanted to do. Someone asked me to create an IRC for us. I thought it was a neat idea and spent a good couple months really invested into accomplishing what I'd wanted. It was a struggle but I did manage to create it in the end.

I later added a GUI, then continued to improve it for several months.

It had a lot of concepts I could have used that would have saved me a lot of time and effort.

I don't read it anymore, that was two years ago.

I started with Java in college, did a bit of python, C++, lisp and other stuff but mostly Java, did C and C++ for about a year after college, now I do Java - Android, and objective C - iOS and a bit of PHP for websites or wordpress plugins.

The one I am reading, which I bought out of high school, is about Objective C. I wanted to invest in something I could get something more useful out of.

cause i haven't seen a task that actually works with sql...

sql's easy it's not even a language by normal standards.

Python is awesome, but limited when it comes to creating Applications, ect.

Its easier to use as a scripting language than as something to build Apps or programs out of.

i think it's all just writing essay's which sucks

sql is less about the statements and more about understanding exactly what it's doing

They had an Information Technology course, but it was borderline useless if you were going in wanting to learn to program. It was mostly just facts, and about finding issues with proposed IT systems.

i even complained about that the whole year in my int class. i think i convinced the teacher to do programming the whole year next year :D

My ITN class is photoshop but i thinks that's changed over my complaining lol

The final exam was pretty easy too, they just pitched "IT Systems" at you and you just point out how it violates your privacy and voila, you get a 7/7.
