I'm looking for a simple algorithm to generate a large number of random, aesthetically pleasing colors. So no crazy neon colors, colors reminiscent of feces, etc. I've found solutions to this problem but they rely on alternative color palettes than RGB. I would rather just use straight RGB than...

one of these things here says you can take an RGB colour, convert to something called XYZ, then into something called CIE-L*ab which allows you to adjust the angle of the observer and lighting, then convert back to XYZ and back to RGB ...

@JoeWatkins RGB-to-HSL conversion and back is easy enough, there's sample PHP code out there for it (albeit crappy but who cares)

it's the adjustment, there's no clear answer, I don't think ...

unless I misunderstand something ... converting the color to another scheme is ranges from easy to difficult, but all doable, but what I don't get is how I take the converted form and change it so I get a color that doesn't clash with the original, that's on the opposite side of the cube or whatever shape the scheme is modelled as ...
