they're used as pleasantries - someone saying them is typically not looking for a complete, honest answer. unless it's your doctor asking you can treat them pretty much interchangeably - respond with something brief and positive then move on with the conversation

For example, the SAM extension has some related bug reports, but its last release was over a decade ago (targeting PHP 4.x). I know Kalle has suspended similar bugs (albeit not quite as old as this), but it just seems kind of pointless to keep these sorts of bug reports lying around...
