@Sajad because when it's an http request it's usually <3 seconds, then you hand the page to the client and the connection is closed implicitly, while cronjob will keep it open until the process finishes

@Sajad the cron script should make a "pid file" when it's starts running. In this file you can store the progress state of the long-running cronjob. That way when your website can also provide a progress bar for said process.
