Just 2 cents: In signed XML you make the fingerprint part of the signed XML. So if the certificate on the other side doesn't match, that certificate's fingerprint will be different, which means the signature is different -> refused.

If you do have a function to obtain the fingerprint for a CA, it should do nothing else then get the fingerprint or throw an error if the CA file isnt available/invalid
