Guys, if someone has a name "Alex Larsen", and I want to call him with a name something shorter, then which one of the following is the best alternative?

1) Lar' or Al'
2) Lars
3) Lex
4) AL
5) Alsen

@EnglishMaster if it's strictly a choice between those, then 4) is somewhat safe. far safer, though, would be to ask him if he has a nickname.

i don't see why. but if you don't care about his preference, then 4) might be acceptable -- as long as both letters are capped. 1) is non-standard contraction, 2) and 5) are entirely different names, and 3) is situational

if he doesn't typically go by a particular nickname, then you don't gain anything by calling him that.

@EnglishMaster Reasonable code is when you look at a routine and it's pretty much what you expected. Great code is when you look at a routine and realize it's much simpler than you even imagined was possible to accomplish what it does.

@MarkGarcia Most profs I've seen produce mediocre to fair code at best.

that's all one quad, I use glCopyImageSubData() to lift letters off of a bmp with all of the characters on it, do you think this is preferable to using glyphs?

@MarkGarcia I've wondered at times if they were deliberately dumbing the code down a bit for an audience they're not sure will understand anything too sophisticated--but then again, from what I've seen it seems to mostly remain true even in the most advanced classes and research.

in classes this spring and last fall my professors didn't seem c++ 11 literate

like my graphics prof's compiler didn't compile c++ 11

@AaronKyleKilleen I'd be almost surprised if they were (unless you were going to Texas A&M or possibly UIUC).

and I got a question wrong erroneously when my prof didn't know about the vector member shrink to fit

but by far the most frustrating thing was using the commands they gave us to compile our code on their server for a networking class and getting compiler errors for putting int i = 0 before the first semicolon in a for loop
