I've tried to spin it by hand and some voltage did show on the meter

but my 4th drill had batteries discharged and it's kinda thrashed anyway so I couldn't test it properly

I hate implicit conversions. You can't drop `.value` anyhoops (for the same reason you had `.get()` in `set_color`; you have to add a local variable and spell out the expected type; It's too easy to forget to make that a reference. In fact, you forgot to mention the ref in your `operator T()` suggestion.)
Moreover "more compatible to the rest of Spirit" seems like a bogus claim to me (what were you thinking of?)
Finally, I would not make `mutable_wrapper` "cute". I consider it band-aid for a bug in the library that made the extended context immutable there.

And finally, it's a waste of time, making "mutable_wrapper" seem like a useful thing (which it is not. It's band-aid and no library should adopt it as a utility because it enables design flaws only, IMO)
