One industry I always wanted to get myself into, but I know the competition is fierce

and pay is low

Unreal is the most commonly asked by companies (and the one I'll be using). I started on Unity, which is good for mobile games, but a bit lacking for bigger productions. It's more beginner friendly than Unreal imo. I did two years of that between internships and actual job. Self taught in Unreal, plus 1y of C++ now got me an entry level job.

I learned very little in school, and companies never asked if I did any.

And yes, pay is lower than almost any other file din Computer Science

I had another meeting with my teamleader of my internship

It's always the same, just like with school: "focus on the assignment alone, don't do too much, don't do it that way" etc and it's all fun and games when in school and you get steered

but I am really starting to doubt if I am ever able to perform for a company

As someone in an internship, they really shouldn't be expecting too much of you - and should be steering you towards what to do

There's a new girl that started here as our external support. They hired her as a junior, onto a role that requires nothing less of a senior

She is probably feeling the same way as you

If I were you, I would try not to interpret your failure to do something that might be beyond your currently experience-level as an indication of how you will do in the future

As long as you are eager to learn, and you keep progressing positively, by your own standards, that is what matters

@MwBakker "Focus on the assignment alone" and "don't do too much" are legitimate feedback points -- if you have a tendency to go overboard and rewrite large swathes of a system you're touching, that's often not good (although there are legitimate cases where something just needs to be purged with fire)

"don't do it that way" should be accompanied by an explanation of why that way is not good, and what way is.

As for your use of the word "ever" -- You are in this chatroom. You are already ahead of the curve.

@ballBreaker I had recently reflected on measurements of success -- and I had realized that pinning my success values on objective (if vague and unquantifiable) criteria makes a buttload more sense than a subjective criterion like "how do I compare to the other people sitting next to me".

So, my interview ended up being about 15 minutes. The guy before me didn't check to see who was after him and so didn't turn on the GTM (because I'm remote)

Unfortunately a lot of managers are "good developers" and not super stars and find it very difficult to manage developers who genuinely care and go above and beyond. The worst of those set will actively try and curtail your effort and extra input

@Mehdi FYI there is an endpoint you can use. May make it more efficient. No offense to Tim :)

You need to be able to balance doing just enough, until you know exactly what the outcome of what you're doing is and communicate those outcomes - and even then you might end up with a manager who is a "good developer"
