My understanding from limited reading is that SO wanted to change the CoC to make it so that people who go by alternate gender (they? he/she?) pronouns would be respected on the site, and Monica tried asking a bunch of questions trying to get clarity on things (and whether just gender neutral responses were ok)
and that instead of actually having a conversation and dealing with the edge cases they just fired her instead
