these confuse me. In what scenario would you need a dependency during compilation but not during runtime?

I have a unit test that instantiates a class from another module, so I add a dependency for it. However I used "testCompileOnly project()" and it works but I expected it to fail because the dependency is not 'available' during test runtime. Obviously I misunderstood the docs

The weird thing is that it compiles and runs in debug mode. But on real devices, it sometimes crashes.
