@MarkO'Sullivan if you have some time and wanna understand the basics, I highly recommend this course, coursera.org/learn/machine-learning it covers everything you need (from Linear Algebra refresh etc...) and how the algorithms actually work and why etc...

I read a book on machine learning once. Actually I stopped after 100 ish pages because I realized I was pretending I understood what most of the words meant

that's why I stopped reading about that, and actually sticked to Andrew Ng's materials (the coursera link)

he doesn't skip notions and is very pedagogic and show exactly what X does and why or why it doesn't work etc..

and unlike the others who assume everyone learning still remembers all their math, he only teaches what you need at the instant T and explains the math around, so much more efficient and appealing to people who've been out of academia for a while
