I'm making a web app that connects random people together. These users have some data that goes along with them (a couple of booleans) and I need to store them with their user IDs. Basically, I need someway for the user to submit that info about themselves, store it, fetch a list of the users and filter the ones based on that user info.

I would imagine I would create a RESTful web interface to submit the users data to a database on the server that lists the current online users with their info. Then when they leave the web app remove them from the table with a DELETE call, or POST whatever.

He says I don't need a database and I can just use a variable...like a global variable everyone shares. Does he mean local memory? Store the list of online users in memory? He setup a node, express, vagrant, grunt, etc stack server.

I'm new to web app dev :/
