Fun fact about Matlab command syntax: 
>> numel a%
ans =
     1
>> numel a %
ans =
     1
>> numel ]%
ans =
     1
>> numel ] %
ans =
     2
So a space after a is not counted as part of the input, but after ] it is

the ] examples throws an error in octave
you can also use mat2str ] % to see the exact string it reads
it seems the space is sufficient, you don't even need the %
