If you only do C#, and try to do everything the C# way, not only are you limiting your experience to One True Way to do things, you're also making it hard for you to adapt to e.g. changes in the C# language.

C# 7 adds a couple of new ways to do things that many people don't like, but I think are interesting, like tuple decomposition.

python is a very popular language, both as a scripting language and as an application language. It's used extensively in academia for math, language processing and other intense calculations. It's got a strong ecosystem for many such uses.

Personal project or company? How big of a company? What's the application's needs? High throughput? What's the estimated data amount? Will this run on the same machine as the application?

Why run on Linux when you can run it on Windows? Because Linux is a fine, supported and stable server environment. If your org's IT infrastructure is already based on linux, adding a Windows server is a pain.

SQL Server Express is nice, though limited in maximum size and features compared to the full-scale SQL server. Will probably be enough for most personal projects. Hosting it will require a Windows server, though. Personal Windows hosting is usually more expensive than the equivalent Linux hosting.

Oracle is right out. It's a huge, expensive beast not suited for anything apart from large-scale enterprise apps, and even then it's probably not a good idea.

MySql is popular for PHP and open-source projects, but there are better alternatives out there if you want open-source friendly, especially since MySql is owned by the ever-litigious Oracle.

Postgres is a good choice.

Generally, over the lifetime of a company/product, the licensing cost of the OS/DB isn't a deciding factor.

It might be early on when a startup is getting started and doesn't have a lot of cash, but that's the reason Microsoft has the BizSpark program, to give startups free licenses for almost anything they need in the first couple of years.

About ten years ago, I had a large road trip through the US, coast to coast. One thing I was afraid of was their love-in-a-canoe beer.

But I was pleasantly surprised. Everywhere you go, there are local breweries with local beers - I'm not talking artisanal craft beers, which you mainly get in the large coastal cities (though they're usually fantastic). I'm talking about generic, commercial beers from smaller local breweries. And many of them were great.

It's easy enough to avoid the Bud Lights and Millers and find good, cheap beers.
