I have a giant list of unique variables stored in an array. It takes up about 500 lines of code. It's a list of all the items available in my console RPG. Since I cannot call .Add() to add my variables to the arraylist in the class itself, I must put it in a method. Is there a better way to do this?
@Stopforgettingmyaccounts... you can load all concrete types from the loaded assemblies dynamically if you now an interface and the implementation can be activated via the Activator or some DI/IoC container.
Will the algorithm described in this answer correctly construct a tree structure from a flat list? It seems to me that the algorithm would fail for >1 level trees.

could anyone tell me if I use a datagrid, populate it with a linq query tolist is there any reason I shouldn't be able to edit the cells? I have no obvious properties set to prevent this like readonly.
I wandered if I can't do this and need to set the item sorce as a datatable or something
OK datatable didn't seem to work I was thinking of something else I was doing earlier with crystal reports.

Can anyone offer some advice on Web Services in .NET. Previously I've written web services with ASMX, for POX and Json. I've read a lot about ditching ASMX and using Wcf. My problem is I need to support POX and Json. Wcf seems overkill for what I need. But now I've come across Web API. I noticed it is similar to Wcf.
My question is, with regards exception and error handling in the Web API service, is it best practice to return a custom error object
@MarcinJuraszek Yeah that is what I've read WebAPI is a good choice. Is it good practice for that I try catch all code, capture any exceptions and response with my own custom error object like
