The big difference this year was that there was no hardware, only software

I'm surprised how much they talked about the APIs during the keynote, they usually leave that for the Platform State of the Union

Yes, they talk a lot more about dev stuff than they did in the past years.

But I have to say what I hate a bit is all that stuff with "everyone can code". Because they make so big "abstractions" that I think like it is not even like real coding. And if most of them would write "real" code they would probably write awful code.

I agree. I like how they're pushing code with kids but the market is currently oversaturated with mediocre devs

@JAL It will maybe be very useful to some few of them by giving them this information/access to code as early as possible and they can get good coders, but most of the will probably never understand "real" code, because of all the abstraction. And if they write real code it will probably be really awful.

Trust me, I see that every day when my devs who know Objective-C try to write Swift. It's painful to watch. Part of learning a new language isn't just getting the hang of the syntax, it's understanding the patterns and best practices of the language too

@JAL Not everything is good all the times, so instead of just deleting it I put the newlines in, so I don't see it all the time.

@JAL Yes. I have saw people working with frameworks (WordPress for example) and then they get a PHP syntax error. And if you then tell them it is NOT a WordPress error they don't even know what that is. And then you tell them that WordPress is just a framework written in PHP you blow their minds and destroy their lovely world:P

Swift 2 introduced the ability to throw errors. These aren't exceptions, they don't crash your app, they're just another way of handling errors. When a colleague of mine said that he started throwing exceptions I was so pissed since it showed a clear lack of understanding of the concept

@QPaysTaxes Those are then the people who copy&paste their code together as an employed developer and get payed for it.

@JAL Just stumbled across it. Now I've seen examples, where people just put colored foil on top of the keyboard lights, but I don't know if there are rgb macbook pro backlights somewhere. I mean they would have to be really thin and exactly made for a macbook pro.

@QPaysTaxes not, really. sometimes in async calls you would normally pass an object an an error, where here you can just throw an error and catch it:

yeah you can "catch" different kinds of errors, or the error is automatically populated if you don't specific it

but to make things more complicated there is an NSException object which is used with crashes, like going out of bounds in an array, etc

well the compiler will complain if you don't catch it.

@JAL When apple still used Objective-C and I took a look at the XCode IDE I was so overwhelmed by the entire IDE and how many things you see which you don't know what they do.

Apple still uses Objective-C for most of its frameworks and modules

and yes, I'm still overwhelmed by Xcode

I sent an engineer to Cupertino two weeks ago to work on integrating with one, their TV-sign-in framework pass kit thing

the TV Provider Sign in component and the new Messages extension are written in Objective-C for sure

@JAL (Adding to that "everyone can code" thingy: What I also really hate, besides those games where you don't even see anymore how real code works, is when people start in very high level languages and don't even get a connection to C or assembly. So they never see how it really works. They will write their fancy code and have no idea what is going on. Almost like people who don't code, who also don't know what is going on.)

@Rizier123 It was hard going from Java to C in college and then back to high-level languages

I still don't feel like I really "know" C, but I guess I never will

Yeah, I also don't know much about C anymore, but I think like C is still a pretty good start in programming. Not too low-level(very complicated) and not too high-level(too much abstraction).

@Rizier123 No currently published personal apps, but I wrote a bunch for my past jobs. The most famous ones would probably be the Tomorrowland movie companion app for Disney, Abercrombie & Fitch/Hollister, and the A+E Networks suite of apps (A&E, HISTORY, Lifetime, FYI)

Funny enough I worked on the music player in that app mostly. I feel like the two things Abercrombie is most know for are the loud music and that stupid cologne

yup. I was only once in a shop from them and that's the only thing I remember.

Oh, and bad lighting. Everything is so dark there.

they used to spray the stuff in the offices too. fortunately they stopped or else I wouldn't be able to breath

that was a really fun job. I was the only engineer in my office in NYC, everyone else was either in Columbus or Philly

@tripleee I don't know. If there are tooo many silly mistakes due to the lack of basic understanding I'd choose too broad instead

I saw this discussion on meta meta.stackoverflow.com/q/326031/2333214. The question referred to was closed as unclear and then deleted very quickly. The answer being discussed and most voted answer in meta shows that the question was very clear.

I have a bad feeling about this. I don't know android but if The question "How can I from app A on device X access the database of app B on device Y" has a definitive answer, and hint, it isn't "You can't". is true, then the actions taken here - closing a new user's question as unclear and quickly deleting it was not ideal. If the above statement holds true, then the question was definitely very clear, though it might have been too broad. What kind of picture does this give to a new user? That we quickly delete questions which we can't easily answer without giving proper reasons? — T J 24 mins ago
