Yeah. Its standard mobile safari behavior. What I have a problem with is it treats my page height differently than it should.

well that depends. If you give the body a background color can you see it through the transparent UI?

When the controls pop up and take up screen real estate, Safari apparently ignores that the viewport has changed.

@LynelHudson Has the viewport changed though? E.g. do the controls make the viewport smaller or do they go on top of the viewport (overlap)

@joshhunt Thats the problem. They overlay on top. This is undesirable for my site because it forces the user to scroll to see the rest of the page. What I would like is for the page to just resize and keep everything in view.

@animaacija I'm still new to mobile design, but if you want to zoom the page maybe you can do it with a meta tag.

@LynelHudson Unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can do about this if the viewport doesn't get changed. The only possibility that I can think of is detect for mobile safari and add padding-bottom: 50px (or whatever), sounds very messy though.

@joshhunt Yeah but that wouldn't work exactly because this only happens when the iphone is landscaped.

@animaacija responsive is the opposite of zoom, e.g. you reformat the page so that the user doesn't have to zoom in and out

@joshhunt yes. ill have to do this... but for tablets only.. reading web on phones is ridiculous i do not support that ..

@LynelHudson you could use a media query that detects for device-width, device-height, resolution to try and make it so that it only happens on an iPhone. Again sounds messy though, what if they use Chrome on an iPhone?

now I want to spread out the span tags so that they get all the room available in the <td>
