It would output something like

That is just the beginning, and the formatting is not right on this chat.
To do this, create a text file with this exact text:
~BIRD.*?(?:CAT(*SKIP)(*F)|WORM)~C The BIRD gets to the WORM The BIRD is caught by a CAT before getting the WORM
Call that file catworm.txt
Then you can do pcretest catworm.txt
One benefit is that you are guaranteed that this is the debug path for PCRE
That's really nice graphical output for a CUI engine.
I also found out that this snippet (.*?(?:a(*SKIP)(*F)|b)) works better if the primary group (the section before S-F; a) is a literal sequence. Otherwise there may be a lot of backtracking.
