Yes, this is an unfrozen room; so if I get new information I'll add it once it's confirmed. --- This year it's either for secret hats, for nothing, and for New Year's Glasses (probably no star needed; when they are announced, if we have them this year).
@Rob "Buche de Noel" and "Where in the World" are another example of hats that are only active on a specific day, those don't have to be the only days with extra hats and if they are secret they won't be announced; comment starring might still be a trigger at a later date.
It seems that even 8 stars isn't enough this time, could it be the case that there's no hat this year for starred chat messages? If so, I think it makes sense because last year it was a cheap hat that people cheated to get.
