that's one of the ways to use d3. This way is using react (like you asked) but all the new modular d3 bits for calculating spacing and placements

There is nothing wrong with using the 'normal' d3 api, if you like.

I used my react-d3 hybrid for the same reasons, I found d3 slightly distasteful. But plain d3 is a better choice for 'other devs' as it's so widespread. There is lots of copy pasta.
