another thing about back-end optimization: I've been trying to keep the frontend to never learn about the id of users (just their name), while the backend would mainly only care about the id. Turns out this was not a wise choice

thing is, users can change their name, but I feel like sending user ids over the network is messy and unelegant, and I think there's maybe less optimizations postgres can do on querying by string rather than by integer

just to be clear: the primary key of the users in the database is still the id. The node backend has access to both ids and names, but the client can only use names

in a way, it kind of helps think about what comes from what, semantically

but in the end, there's a lot of extra things to take care of, which might not be worth the hassle when expanding the codebase (which is not something that I'm realistically going to need to worry about, but I'd like to do a good job, and learn how to do it properly)

twitter seems to be using only names for the client too
