What is exactly meant by out of scope in this case. Something like:
List foo() {
   ...
   return new ArrayList();
}
?

List foo() {
   ...
   ArrayList<String> strList = new Arraylist();
   String text = "text";
   strList.add (text)
   return strList;
}
