mainly because getting shitpoint work was easy and worth a bigger wedge

just depends on the app you're building mostly

I'd recommend an upgrade to at least 8GB for a dev machine though

just makes life a bit nicer ... these days I rarely touch a machine with less than 16GB myself

it's pretty gutless when you do some of the stuff i've been trying to do with it though

like running a VM based network locally to "try out setting up a domain"

or running a voxel farm server and game client to consume it

or load testing networking protocols for realtime socket connections

or trying to gpu compute a world

I reckon about 1 or 2 more generations of tech and the stuff i'm building today will come in to it's own

I only recently upgraded so that's why my rig is top spec

before the recent upgrade i had a first gen 8 year old i7 920 cpu

and a board that barely used it well

I think that thing maxxed out at 8GB of ram too

I only upgraded because it wouldn't have been able to push the new gfx card i bought

turns out that not all pci busses are born equal

mines got some special lanes for extra bandwidth between cpu and gpu

pcie v3

it means you get some insane throughput (GB/s from cpu to gpu)

Wow that fucking wrecked my system

Reinstalling windows now ... Thanks Asus for enabling secure boot and preventing me from turning it off with a set of keys that obv don't match the setup before

All because of a game install ... Sheesh!!!

At least windows only takes 2 mins to install

It's all the other shit that takes forever (you know, vs, sql, steam + games)

I guess I will be getting capped again by virgin in the next 24 hours
