@SpringLearner itext latest version is most stable, however you need to go back to version like 2.1.7 to have a free version (with the problems showed above).. note, jasper reports is a lib to dev reports, hence more to handle layout, from that lib then you can export to pdf (using itext 2.1.7 version), excel/word (using poi) etc.
