@StackedCrooked Unfortunately, you pretty much can't do it around here any more, no matter how willing you might be. Years ago a couple of kids lied about their weight, so instead of getting close to the ground, they both hit the ground (head first) and died. So, they passed new requirements that any bungie jump operator carry $1M worth of insurance. That would work out to about $400/jump to cover the insurance alone, which killed the business.

@StackedCrooked It was the first Google outage where I learned it about it from outside of the company. They usually sent a company-wide email when something big goes down. But that didn't work today.

In the end it was only a couple of hours. I think the only unusual thing is that we don't expect this with Google.

I read it was caused by blocking waits on (depleted) /dev/random.

The cause for today's outage hasn't been published yet. Not even internally.

Today's outage is world-wide. So I don't think it's a load-imbalance issue. It's probably somebody submitted a bad code submissions that broke something fundamental. And it took them how ever many minutes it was down for to figure out what submission it was and revert it.
