Most people that come in here to ask questions don't realize they are doing something wrong. They probably think of this room a chat-based variation of SO. If we then react harshly the person feels he's being treated unfairly. This causes most of them just leave, but some of them become revengeful.

I'm trying to communicate between a BeagleBoard running angstrom linux and node.js and my companies proprietary hardware via serial modbus rtu. first the serial cape didn't want to recognize the port, then after I got that sorted the master won't connect to our slave device. four and a half days just to get here.. Most misleading piece of C I've ever seen.

Of course it took me forever before I actually read the compiler output instead of assuming it was giving a random warning/error, but was complaining about a statement outside of the function. When it says missing a type for declaration, you figure it just assumes everything is a declaration out there.

Yeah, I do that. Those kinds of things just pop up from, say, an unused variable that I really just don't care about yet.

I use those three, but -pedantic-errors. I can see someone not liking the errors from that depending what kind of code they deal with, though.

@sehe Depends somewhat on the compiler. Some can/will emit some pretty silly warnings, and the things you have to do to get rid of those warnings can be quite detrimental to your code. Classic case: emitting a warning about ignoring the return value from a function. That may initially seem sensible, but isn't so great when you end up with things like static_cast<void>(std::cout<<1);

Whereas voting doesn't require anything.

You probably don't realize this, but the vast majority of the suspensions that take place involve "voting irregularities".

If he does in a short duration, it gets automatically reversed.

If it spreads it out, it would remain undetected until a mod sees it.

The mod would then check the ip address and other sorts of interaction.

To see if the two accounts are the same.

Details, I don't know since I've never been a mod on any SE site.

But if the mod concludes that the two accounts are the same, (s)he'll delete the smaller account and suspend or warn the primary account.

Although 200 a day is hard to keep up unless the receiving account keeps making new posts or if new sockpuppets are made every day.

@GlennTeitelbaum You can't give the +15 unless the person answered your question. And if you have an account with tons of +15 from empty accounts, it would look suspicious.

Chances are the questions will be bad where they'd get nuked by the community anyway.

If the questions are actually legit, then you can get away for longer. But it's only +15 per question.

I won't be surprised if SE has an automated script that will detect net voting irregularities even if they don't happen in a short amount of time. And then they alert the moderators.

But judging at the proportion of suspended users that are for sockpuppetting I can see that this is a huge problem that SE has spent a lot of time combating. (the details of which we won't know)

Of course, if you know what you're doing, you get go quite a ways before you get caught.
