Q: Why aren't character vectors in R called string vectors?

In C, on which R is based, strings are actually 1D arrays (analog of R vectors) of characters. So the term "character vector" suggests, falsely, just a single string. (The suggestion is false because the term actually refers in R to a vector of strings.) If the elements of character vectors are...

I'm waiting for all the obvious follow-ups. Why aren't logical vectors called boolean vectors? Why aren't numeric vectors called double vectors? Why aren't lists called pointer vectors?
