Our economy might be recovering right now, but the Europe situation is downing it. Not a policy thing IMO, more of a bad luck and timing thing.

He's been pretty careful to point to the notion that what he's written about is only a tiny part of what he's really done, and his conclusions are all based on work that's much more solid, but that he hasn't told us enough about to evaluate at all. His replies to the comments are all full of "How do you know I didn't?", "I really did a lot more than I wrote about", etc.

The suggestion there is that it's down to short-termism in managers and shareholders preferring share buybacks etc. over capital investment.

micro-benchmarking is hard. In fact, there was na excellent paper on that (which he may or may not know, but is very relevant here) which shows that even the number of environment variables (yes!) can influence a program’s performance drastically, rendering the benchmark completely moot

@Jerry in particular, he finds that Java outperforms C++ here, and he finds that one compiler version outperforms another one drastically – but he can explain none of these results, rendering them utterly useless to extrapolate from

@R.MartinhoFernandes I have to admit, we had a basically equivalent code for the longest time in our library without noticing. Our excuse, the code was actually much more complex than that and nobody noticed that it essentially boiled down to this for some combinations of types

Going back to the question of benchmarks, I find it a bit hard to imagine how anybody could actually look at the results on the computer language benchmarks game site, and characterize it as Java being even close to C++. In terms of speed, the best Java ever manages is a tie, and it sometimes loses by up to about 3x. In memory usage, it's much worse, nearly always losing by a factor of at least 3.

The build system will define VIEWS_EXPORT to be something different depending on what kind of build is (this is usual when building DLLs, for example)

If the build system don't define VIEWS_EXPORT, that piece of code you found defines it to nothing, so it won't cause errors.

@Cicada I even had a case where ping didn't resolve a host on the local net even though it was in /etc/hosts....but nslookup was fine. Seemed like it was some interaction between all the different parts that was disconnected somehow.

I'd remove part about the file and just say "I have a bunch of regularly space points. I need to build triangles out of them. What algorithm can I use for that?".

Giving out specs for the file gives off the wrong idea, IMO.

am I on the right track, you wouldn't define them in the constructor because you don't need an instance to use them? so they need to get defined externally?

Just remember that the header (where the var is declared) can be included any number of times, but the static var must only be defined once.
